Tax Refund: A Little Bit About Ourselves

We’ve Been Getting Tax Refunds For Ordinary Taxpayers For Over 24 Years.

The Tax Refund Company has been helping ordinary employed taxpayers – like you – check their tax code for mistakes and claim a tax refund since 1994.

With over 2.9 million taxpayers having applied for our tax code review and with a reputation for leaving no stone unturned in our search for overpaid tax, we’ve grown to become the UK’s leading professional tax refund specialists.

The No.1 Tax Refund Company

Our No. 1 position is recognised by employers, Trade Unions and Professional Bodies the length and breadth of Britain, with many recommending our service to their employees and members over the last 24 years.

Not to be confused with other rebate companies offering a “cheap and cheerful” service that looks for the obvious errors whilst ignoring the more complicated and time consuming ones, at The Tax Refund Company we take the view our clients deserve to get back every £ they’re entitled to and it’s our job to help them get it, no matter what it takes.

1 In 3 Clients Get A Tax Refund

Over 1 in 3* clients receive a refund when they let our experts check their tax code. With our cast iron “Largest Refund Guarantee”, we’ll make sure that if you’ve paid too much tax, you’ll get every £ back.

We’ll fight your corner to ensure HMRC give you back every £ you’re due, which is not something you can be certain of when contacting HMRC yourself! Even if you manage to get through to HMRC, you can’t be certain they’ve given you the correct advice. It’s the same if you get a refund – you won’t know it’s the right amount unless you have someone on your side who knows exactly what they’re doing and with your interests at heart.

We know tax is confusing – given the PAYE tax code guide is over 22,000 pages long, it’s not something you’re going to understand any time soon, so we’ve done our best to make it simple, quick and easy for almost anyone to use our service – just complete the application form and answer a few questions and we’ll get started.

We’re On Your Side

We’ll provide you with a totally independent review – remember we’re on your side and you’ll only pay us if we get your money back, otherwise there’s no charge.

Where you get a tax refund, our fees are clear and simple – if you get up to £100 back, we charge £38. If you get over £100, we charge 38p for each £1 we recover. If for any reason your refund is under £38, you won’t need to pay us any more than we got back for you.

We won’t charge you anything on refunds we get back for a current tax year and that is paid directly into your wages – we’ll let you keep the whole amount – so you could get a refund and pay us nothing. You also won’t need to pay us anything for the money you save after we’ve completed your review and corrected your tax code.

Average Tax Refund Of £206.82

Our refunds average £206.82** each, but there are thousands of clients who’ve ended up getting back up to £14,900 and every single one of them started out right where you are now, wondering whether it was worth doing. After all, they were “on PAYE and their employer looked after their tax” so why would they have paid too much!

So if you want the chance to put your money back where it belongs, in your pocket rather than in HMRC’s, it takes just a couple of minutes to get started. It could turn out to be the best investment of time you’ve ever made.

Any Questions

If you’ve got any questions, there’s a good chance you’ll find the answer on our FAQ page, which has the answers to our 30 most commonly asked questions. If you can’t find the answer, give our expert team a call on 0161 968 7345 and we’ll be happy to help. Lines are open Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm.

Tax Refunds: Can I Just Do It Myself?

So, getting a tax refund yourself is the best option right?

If you really know what you’re doing and can actually get through to HMRC regarding your tax refund, of course you can.

But that assumes you’ve got lots of patience, plenty of time, and know exactly which areas of your tax you need to look at in each of the last 4 tax years. You’ll also need to know which allowances you were entitled to claim, where mistakes may have been made by HMRC or an employer, and most importantly, what questions you’re going to need to ask HMRC.

It also assumes you know enough about the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) rules so when you ask HMRC a question, you know the answers they give you are actually right, which may not always be the case! A survey of HMRC’s customer call centres by The Low Income Tax Reform Group found that HMRC consistently made mistakes – in some more complicated cases up to 80% of the answers they gave were wrong!

If you manage to get a tax refund yourself, you’ll need to know enough about tax to check it’s the right amount. If they pay you too much, you can be certain they’ll want it back in the future, even if you’ve spent it! It’s actually more likely they won’t pay you enough, so you might have missed out on a large refund we could have got back for you. Let’s be clear though, if they don’t send you enough, it’s most likely going to be your fault for not asking the right questions, not HMRC’s.

The other thing you need to be aware of (and this is something you never get told by all those people and websites who say you can do this yourself), is that by speaking directly to HMRC and asking them to open your file to check your tax, they might say you owe them money! They may be right, but the amount you owe could be much less than they’re telling you. Over 50% of the underpayment cases we look at are wrong! Unless you know what you’re doing, you’ll have no option but to pay them the amount they demand. They’ll probably just start taking it from your wages so you’ll have no choice.

Using our service, you’ll avoid these risks because we know exactly what we’re doing (as we should do having done this for over 2.9 million taxpayers in the last 22 years) and we’ll only contact HMRC if we think you’re owed a refund.

Tax Refunds: How Long have We Been Doing This

We’ve been ‘doing’ tax refunds for quite a long time.

8,695 days at the time of writing this…

…or 208,680 hours

…or 751,248,000 seconds!!

The service actually became available on the 19th August 1993. That’s a long time!

Although in those days the service was called Professional Taxation Services, until it seemed everyone thought they needed to be a doctor, solicitor, architect or something “professional” sounding to use the service.

The business has changed hands since then and significant investment through our new owners is enabling us to implement a whole raft of new initiatives to help improve the service we offer you. We’re quicker, slicker and a whole lot bigger!

Tax Refunds: What Happens To My Cheque?…

So let’s say you’ve got your tax refund – A nice healthy amount which HMRC have been stashing away from you – What happens next?…

If they follow your instructions, HMRC will send us your cheque. We’ll take our fee and send the remaining bit to you.

And then your cheque should pop through your letter box within 28 days of the date shown on the letter you’ve got about your tax refund from HMRC.

As a famous meerkat once said… Simples.

28 days is just a guide because local or national postal strikes, changes in the way HMRC send out assessments and refunds or other unknown forces might slow things up.

It also takes up to 28 days because we often don’t get the cheque for 7-10 days after they send you a letter, even though your letter may say they’ve sent it.

Don’t worry, we aren’t going to run off into the night with it!

Once we’ve got your refund, we’ll check it’s correct and hold on to it for a minimum 7 days to make sure HMRC doesn’t ask for some of it back!

We do get cheques for more than the amount due and HMRC will ALWAYS want it back, so the last thing we want to do is to send you a refund and then have HMRC ask you for some of it back!
